We are loving this wearing-one-layer-of-clothing-only business around here.

The sunny warmth makes us grin like big cheeseballs:

I love these little purple weed flowers. I’d love to keep this patch for portraits. We’ll see if I can get that plan past Captain Pushmower.

When Katie contacted me about a 1940′s travel themed engagement session in Charleston, I was really excited. I tend to shoot candidly, and have never done a stylized couples shoot before, but I was game to give it a shot.

Matt is in the Air Force, stationed in Sumter. Katie is in California, and when she came to South Carolina to visit, they made the trip down to Charleston.

I chose North Charleston’s historic district for the session because of the cool locations, vintage feel, and relative lack of traffic. Katie loved the vibe of the area, and said it had the feel of a Brooklyn to downtown Charleston’s Manhattan.

We topped off the shoot with a trip to Madra Rua for a round of black and blues, and baskets of what Matt and Katie pronounced to be some of the best chicken fingers they’ve had.

Congratulations, guys!

Last week, I got 18 out of 24 photos back from a roll of black and white film, because I am a genius and opened the back of my old Minolta without rewinding the film all the way.

Here are a few favorites from the salveaged images:

She’s a rock star. She’s got a really sunny disposition, but she instinctively knows to go moody when I bust out the film camera.

Justin and Jodi were engaged at Folly Beach, in a plan Justin concocted and pulled off with the help of some friends.

Here’s a photo, taken by their friend Janet Saunders, of the champagne, tiki torches, and “All You Need is Love”  graffiti in the background:

So of course, a return to Folly Beach was in order to shoot their engagement photos.

We had a blast exploring and shooting under the boardwalk, but soon, the cold drove us inside. Earlier in the day, the thermometer had kissed 70 degrees, so, giddy to not have to be wearing the usual 900 layers, Jodi and I both arrived for the shoot sans jacket. (Well, Justin did too, but guys can always suck it up and handle the cold.)

Luckily, Tides Folly Beach awaited us, and Jodi’s fingers went from being literally blue to holding a coffee cup inside the restaurant Blu,  which was a pleasant transition.

I can’t wait until May, guys!
